Everyone knows what a whiplash injury is. Usually brought on by car accidents, traumatic falls or collision sports such as boxing or rugby, whiplash injuries occur when your head moves rapidly and unexpectedly back and forth. Violent movement of this kind causes a neck strain, damaging the ligaments, the muscles and the joints of the affected area. Sometimes the spinal discs may be affected in severe cases. Sufferers feel neck pain, stiffness and inflammation along with other unpleasant symptoms brought on by the affected spinal joints.
In the past typical whiplash injuries, especially where no bones were broken, were difficult to document. Soft tissue injury could not be seen on normal x-rays/radiographs and often insurance companies would deny coverage. This added insult to injury, any patient who suffered the very real pain was considered to be a fraud, a liar, or at best a hypochondriac. New imaging devices (CAT Scans, Magnetic Imaging, and Ultra Sound) are now able to show soft tissue injury and insurance companies will cover most whiplash injuries. When no bones are broken and the head doesn’t strike the windshield, typical symptoms are as follows: 62% to 98% complain of neck pain, which typically starts two hours up to two days after the accident. This is often the result of tightened muscles that react to either muscle tears or excessive movement of joints from ligament damage. The muscles tighten in an effort to splint and support the head, limiting the excessive movement.
Sixty-six to 70% of those suffering from whiplash complain of headache. The pain may be on one side or both, on again off again or constant, in one spot or more general. These headaches, like the neck pain, are often the result of tightened, tensed muscles trying to keep the head stable and, like tension headaches, they are often felt behind the eyes.
Generally, prognosis for individuals with whiplash is good. The neck and head pain clears within a few days or weeks. Most patients recover within 3 months after the injury, however, some may continue to have residual neck pain and headaches.

Another of our Las Vegas chiropractors, Dr Peter Randall chose to pursue a direction that stressed health rather than sickness. He met a chiropractor at the fitness club where he was employed who explained what chiropractic care was about, and after doing some research, it sounded great! So his next project ended up being to contact local chiropractors to look at them working with patients. He says that after practicing as a doctor of chiropractic for over twenty six years, and having performed over one million chiropractic adjustments as part of his career, he still absolutely loves what he does! Indeed, he would not choose to do anything else for a career but chiropractic.
