The structure of the medical field can be confusing to those that are unfamiliar with it. With a number of different titles and specialties which medical personnel are associated with, it can create a twisted maze for an individual seeking medical care to determine where and who they should see.

The foundation of all patient care begins with primary care. This designation of the medical practice employs primary care physicians or internal medicine physicians who see all ages and any number of different conditions in an acute or chronic setting both physical and mental. These providers have a wealth of general knowledge which aids in their ability to diagnose problems and initiate treatment for patients. In the event a general provider is unable to address an ailment they will then refer the person to the appropriate specialist that deals with the condition. Once a patient has been stabilized, it is not uncommon for the specialist to then send the patient back to their primary care physician to continue care.

What is Primary Care?

A primary care physician is essential to the continuity of care for patients, especially those with complex medical issues. These are the doctors that are responsible for coordinating care with any other professionals involved in a person’s well-being. Those other professionals may be nursing facilities, home therapy visits, specialists, medical imaging, or any other health care provider.

It is not uncommon to hear of families that grow old with their primary care physician. Patients will often begin seeing their health care provider at a very young age, then continue to see the same professional until the doctor retires. This close relationship is a vital part of providing quality medical care. A close and trusting relationship can be the key to a patient getting the necessary medical attention in a timely manner. Occasionally, it can mean the difference between life and death since it is only natural that a person is unwilling to openly discuss their most intimate conditions or symptoms to a stranger.

Many people like to establish their care with a group facility with multiple primary care physicians. This can work to the advantage of the patient when this is done since it can offer the opportunity for the attending physician to get a second opinion of other professions at the facility if the medical condition is complicated.
