Physiatry is a medical discipline that takes an integrated approach to joint, muscle, bone and nerve injuries that restrict or impair motion either by causing extreme pain or by preventing signals from the brain from reaching an affected part of the body. First accepted by the American Medical Association in 1946, the field first came into its own as the demand for advanced rehabilitation techniques grew rapidly as large numbers of injured soldiers returning from World War II.

A professional physiatrist, often referred to as a rehabilitation specialist, has undergone intensive residency training that encompasses physical and medical treatment for injuries as severe as quadriplegic spinal cord injury and as seemingly trivial as a pinched nerve in the back or a torn knee tendon.

Physiatrists practice in rehabilitation centers that care for severely injured patients, but many also have outpatient clinics that allow them to access equipment and resources that they use in their hospital practices in order to treat far less serious injuries. Other physiatry specialists operate private practices, often in conjunction with orthopedic surgeons or neurosurgeons who treat the acute phase of injuries and physical therapists who carry out the therapy that the rehabilitation specialists prescribes to relieve the pain or limitations that are left over after an injury has fully or partially healed.

Physiatry usually starts with a diagnosis of the injuries and problems involving the musculoskeletal system, take a detailed medical history and then conduct a thorough physical examination of the patient. They may also make use of laboratory tests, MRI scans, x-rays, nerve conduction studies and psychological assessments. The primary aim is to enable the patient to function optimally within the limitations placed upon them by their condition or disease, and the optimization of their quality of life when they are unable to achieve full restoration.

Usually, physiatry is recommended by surgeons or primary care doctors, and the treatment they prescribe, be it medication, whirlpool baths, exercise or physical therapy, is covered by insurance.
