Orthopedic surgeons treat both acute and chronic disorders, and a fast expanding area of orthopedics is sports medicine.

Orthopedic surgeons use surgical treatment, as well as physical therapy and devices like casts or splints, to heal injuries. Among the injuries they commonly treat are bone injuries, strains, damage to muscles or tendons, spine complications, bone tumors and arthritis. They often treat seniors, who face a higher risk of reconstructive surgery, as well as people engaged in sports or physical exercise programs. They are also often called upon to treat injuries resulting from accidents in the work environment, including sprained or damaged muscles.
Recuperation can be lengthy; in due time, however, orthopedic surgery relieves discomfort and achieves increased maneuverability. The prospect of any surgery can be daunting but knowing what to expect reduces anxiety and helps with recovery.
