Neurology

Neurology is a medical specialty which focuses on diagnosing and treating any and all diseases which involve the nervous system. It can be seen as the practical day-to-day application of neuroscience – the body of science involved in studying the nervous system.

Specialist physicians in the field are known as neurologists, and they are trained to deal with neurological disorders.  They can also be found conducting research and clinical trials in the area of neurological disorders.

The route to become a neurologist in the United States is open only to physicians who have completed postgraduate training in neurology after graduation from medical school.

There are a number of subspecialisms in neurology including movement disorders, clinical neurophysiology stroke / vascular neurology, behavioral neurology, and sleep medicine.

What Does a Neurological Examination Involve?

The purpose of a neurological examination is to help the neurologist determine whether a problem exists in the nervous system, and if so where.

A typical neurological examination starts with a review of the patient’s medical history to establish a background and context to their present condition.

A physical neurological examination then tests a number of things including sensation, physical strength, mental function, function of the cranial nerves and vision, general coordination and reflexes. The resulting diagnosis will help guide any therapy and appropriate management.

There is some overlap between neurology and other specialties.  That fits right in at CIM where our model of care is to take a multidisciplinary approach so as to deliver complete injury management to every patient.
