Don’t Let Whiplash Go Untreated

Hello from the Las Vegas chiropractors of Complete Injury Management. We wanted to provide you with this information, Don’t Let Whiplash Go Untreated. We have made it our focus to help patients who are suffering from any type of injury.

Injuries to the neck caused by a sudden movement of the head, backward, forward, or sideways, is referred to as whiplash whether from a car accident, sports, or an accident at work, whiplash or other neck injuries warrant a thorough chiropractic check-up. The biggest danger with whiplash injuries is that the symptoms can take years to develop. Too often people don’t seek treatment until more serious complications develop. Even after whiplash victims settle their insurance claims, some 45% report they still suffer with symptoms two years later.

An untreated whiplash injury is extremely dangerous, being able to cause spinal degeneration, nerve compression and slipped discs.
Sixty-six to 70% of those suffering from whiplash complain of headache. The pain may be on one side or both, on again off again or constant, in one spot or more general. These headaches, like the neck pain, are often the result of tightened, tensed muscles trying to keep the head stable and, like tension headaches, they are often felt behind the eyes.

Shoulder pain often described as pain radiating down the back of the neck into the shoulder blade area, may also be the result of tensed muscles.

How does the chiropractic treatment work?

The chiropractic care doesn’t focus only on getting rid of the symptoms. For a successful treatment, it analyzes the entire picture of the whiplash injury mechanism. First of all, the chiropractic therapy will stabilize and activate the affected spinal joints and only after that will begin the spinal adjustments.
In the first stage of the chiropractic treatment, while waiting for the neck and spinal muscles to become stable, the chiropractor will use ultrasound and manual therapy for reducing the inflammation. For this purpose the specialist can also use ice packs or other forms of cold treatments. Massage is a necessary part of the therapy, relaxing the muscles and increasing blood circulation (which in its turn accelerates the healing process).

What is the prognosis?

Generally, prognosis for individuals with whiplash is good. The neck and head pain clears within a few days or weeks. Most patients recover within 3 months after the injury, however, some may continue to have residual neck pain and headaches.

Victims of whiplash trauma may suffer debilitating chronic symptoms that do not improve with conservative treatment or spine surgery. In those cases, the problems are often described as the result of ‘soft tissue injury’. This website will provide you with information about our surgical treatment program for such injuries. The program is designed to address a variety of problems that can stem from whiplash, including pain, dizziness, headaches, neck and back pain, numbness, tingling, muscle weakness, light sensitivity, fatigue and depression.
